The upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC), scheduled for May 1 and 2 at Auro University in Surat, is expected to open a new era of opportunities for the city’s textile industry. Positioned as a major platform for industrial development in South Gujarat, the conference aims to attract fresh investments, strengthen trade linkages, and promote innovation across key sectors, especially textiles.
Surat, already recognised as one of the world’s largest textile manufacturing hubs, is expected to benefit significantly from the event. The conference will connect global buyers with local manufacturers, helping businesses access new export markets and strategic partnerships. It will also encourage the exchange of advanced technologies and modern production practices, enabling the city’s textile units to improve efficiency, quality, and competitiveness.
Historically, Surat has been an important trade centre since the Mughal era due to its strategic location on the banks of the Tapi River. Over time, the city evolved from natural silk exports to becoming a dominant force in man-made fibre and synthetic textiles. Today, Surat is known as the Silk City of India and remains one of the most dynamic textile clusters in the world.
The scale of the industry is remarkable. Surat contributes nearly 65% of India’s man-made fibre segment and is estimated to produce around 30% of the world’s fabric. The city manufactures nearly 6 crore meters of fabric every day and hosts 240 textile markets with more than 70,000 traders. Its textile sector generates an annual turnover of approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore.
Industry experts believe VGRC can further elevate Surat’s global standing by combining its manufacturing strength with investment inflows and technological advancement. As international demand shifts toward efficient and innovative sourcing hubs, Surat appears well positioned to emerge as an even stronger global textile leader in the years ahead.
